One of the most common reasons people drool is simply their sleeping position. When you sleep on your side or stomach, gravity can cause saliva to escape more easily. Your mouth relaxes, your jaw opens slightly, and moisture ends up on the pillow. Sleeping on your back can often minimize this, though it may take time to get used to.

Certain medications can also increase saliva production. Drugs that affect the nervous system — such as sedatives, antidepressants, or even some antibiotics — can make drooling more noticeable. If you think your medication might be contributing, it’s best to talk with your doctor rather than stopping anything on your own.

Blocked nasal passages are another common factor. When your nose is congested due to allergies, colds, or sinus infections, you naturally breathe through your mouth. This can lead to extra saliva buildup and drooling during the night. Once the congestion clears, the problem often improves on its own.
