10 Short Stories That Prove Being Nice Doesn’t Always Go the Way You Planned

Story 4:
A man’s card got declined at a café, so I offered to cover his coffee. The barista looked uneasy but rang it up. After he left, she whispered, “You know he does that every morning, right? Always picks a new person to pay for him.” Guess I just sponsored his daily hustle.

Story 5:
I work at a beauty salon, and a client accidentally left her designer purse. I called her right away to return it. Later that day, she posted a scathing review accusing us of “taking” it and only calling once she found out we knew who she was. My boss banned her for life — but it still hurt. Sometimes honesty doesn’t pay off.

Story 6:
I gave up my seat on the bus for a tired-looking woman. She smiled, sat down… then blasted TikToks at full volume for fifteen minutes. Every glance from the other passengers said, “Well, you offered.”

Story 7:
It was pouring rain, and I handed my umbrella to a soaked stranger at the bus stop. The next day, I saw him again — holding the umbrella over his dog while he got drenched. Didn’t expect that, but I can’t even be mad.

Story 8:
I held a door open for a guy carrying boxes. One slipped, candles everywhere. I helped clean up — and ended up covered in wax and smelling like “Pumpkin Apple Spice” for a week. My coworkers thought I’d switched to “holiday perfume.”

Story 9:
I helped an older woman load water cases into her car. As a thank-you, she handed me a scratch-off ticket. It was a dud. The next day, I saw her cashing in a big winner of the same kind of ticket. I couldn’t help but laugh at my luck — or lack thereof.

Story 10:
I carried groceries upstairs for my elderly neighbor, and she insisted I take a jar of her homemade pickles. They smelled like vinegar and gym socks had a fight. I tossed them out, but now she keeps asking if I “liked the flavor.” I just smile and nod.

Sometimes kindness gets misunderstood, ignored, or even turned against you — but it still says more about you than anyone else.
