At some point, we all come across situations that leave us feeling uneasy—sometimes, they’re downright creepy. When we encounter something strange or unsettling, it’s almost instinctive to share it with others. As the saying goes, “misery loves company,” and these stories are a prime example.
Here are 12 strange and shocking encounters that people have experienced. Maybe you’ll relate, or perhaps you have a story of your own.
1. The Potent Potato Salad
At a family barbecue, my brother’s new girlfriend brought a homemade potato salad. It tasted a bit odd but still delicious. However, the next day, everyone who ate it got sick. While cleaning up, I noticed a horrible smell from the kitchen trash. I found expired potato salad dressing packets hidden at the bottom of the bin. The stench was unbearable—I was furious and disgusted.
2. The Bus Stop Surprise
There was a well-dressed woman I often saw at the bus stop. She would always eat raw chicken straight from the grocery store, even in the scorching Texas heat. It went on for months, and I could never understand why she did it.
3. The Metro Mishap
One day on the metro, I saw a woman blowing her nose into her dreadlocks. The smell and crustiness made it clear this was a regular habit for her. It was one of the most repulsive things I’d ever seen.
4. The Library Nail Clipper
At the university library, an old man with a long beard came in daily to use the free Wi-Fi. His loud laughter and pile of tangerine peels didn’t bother me, but one day, he started clipping his dirty fingernails. When one of the nails flew in my direction, I went straight to the staff and had him kicked out.
5. The Homeless Man’s Gift
While sitting in the park, a homeless man approached me and silently dropped a folded newspaper into my lap. When I opened it out of curiosity, I found a slimy, rotting mass inside. The smell was nauseating, and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
6. The Unsettling Encounter
At 14, I was grocery shopping with my dad when I wandered into an aisle alone. A little girl nearby told her mom she needed to sneeze, and to my shock, her mom crouched down and let her sneeze directly into her mouth. They acted as if nothing was wrong—it was beyond strange.
