For the longest time, I thought Jeremy and I had built a strong foundation. We married young, shared responsibilities, and agreed to split everything 50-50—rent, groceries, bills. It was a partnership, or so I believed.
Jeremy was the one who found the apartment.
“Baby, you have to see this place,” he said over the phone, excitement in his voice. “It’s perfect for us.”
When I visited, he beamed with pride as he showed me around.
“We’ll split it—$1,000 each, just like we planned,” he said, holding me close. “Our first real home together.”
It all seemed completely legitimate—the lease, the payments, the supposed landlord. I never suspected a thing.
