Every piece of furniture, artwork, and even personal mementos—gone. It felt like my entire life had vanished in my absence. I stood frozen, heart pounding, unsure if I had walked into the wrong house. My first instinct was to call Greg, but his phone rang unanswered. That’s when a sense of panic began to rise. As I moved through the bare living room in disbelief, something caught my eye—a single muddy footprint near the entryway. The tread pattern looked oddly familiar. I looked closer and realized it matched a pair of boots I had gifted Greg’s mother, Linda, just two weeks prior. They had a distinctive floral pattern from a boutique she loved. That unsettling discovery shifted my concern from confusion to suspicion.

I called the police to report the incident. The responding officers were professional and empathetic. They asked if I had any suspects, but I hesitated. I couldn’t yet put into words the storm of betrayal swirling in my mind. After promising to investigate, the officers left, and I was left with a painful question: Where was Greg?
