After a long, demanding year working on an oil pipeline in Alaska, Kyle Greenbecker was finally heading home. All he could think about was reuniting with Lisa, his high school sweetheart and wife. They’d married young, and Kyle had always believed in loyalty and commitment. He never imagined Lisa would doubt him.
When his flight landed, Kyle looked for her at the airport—but she wasn’t there. Assuming she was delayed, he sent her a quick message and took a ride home. No reply.
As he stepped into the house, everything felt… off. Lights on. Silence. Then, in the kitchen, Kyle’s life changed forever.
There, on the table, was a bassinet—with a baby inside. Next to it were two notes. One, written in a rushed and unfamiliar style, read: “You had your fun, now take responsibility for your child.” The second note was from Lisa.
Lisa explained she had found the baby on their doorstep the day before. She admitted she had grown distant and had made mistakes of her own, but the arrival of a child she believed wasn’t hers—or Kyle’s—was too much. She said goodbye and let him know the divorce papers were already filed.
Kyle was stunned. He had never cheated. He didn’t know who the baby belonged to. But the tiny girl looked up at him and gripped his finger. She didn’t cry. She simply held on.
