Trump Raises Prospect of NATO Withdrawal as Rift With European Allies Deepens
President Donald Trump has reignited concerns over the future of NATO by openly raising the possibility of a U.S. withdrawal, intensifying an already serious dispute with European allies over their response to the conflict with Iran.
The confrontation has exposed growing tensions within the transatlantic alliance. Trump has repeatedly criticized European governments for refusing to provide the level of military support Washington has sought during the conflict, arguing that the United States has carried too much of the alliance’s defense burden for too long.
Britain and France have been among the European powers facing Trump’s criticism. Their governments, along with other NATO members, have resisted becoming directly involved in U.S. military operations against Iran while continuing to pursue their own security and diplomatic priorities. NATO itself has not formally joined the conflict.
