For nearly six decades, Dolly Parton and Carl Dean proved that one of the world’s most famous women could build a deeply private life with a man who wanted almost nothing to do with fame.

Their marriage began on May 30, 1966, when Parton was just 20 and Dean was 22. They married in a small ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia, after meeting two years earlier at a laundromat in Nashville.

Their relationship would eventually span 59 years, but it rarely looked like the celebrity marriages the public was accustomed to seeing.
Dean deliberately stayed away from the spotlight. While Parton became an international superstar, he maintained a much quieter existence, preferring home, family life, and the couple’s farm to red carpets and cameras.
