The search for 10-year-old Dulce Victoria came to a sorrowful conclusion this weekend after an intensive, two-day effort in Salamanca, Mexico. Dulce had gone missing after being swept away by the current of the Lerma River near the Pitayo community. On Saturday morning, local authorities confirmed that her body had been found, bringing a wave of grief to the town and surrounding areas.
In a statement, the Salamanca Municipal Government expressed its condolences: “With profound respect, we regret to inform the public of the recovery of the body of a 10-year-old girl who fell into the Lerma River. We offer our deepest sympathy to the family during this time of mourning.” Officials also acknowledged the coordinated efforts of multiple rescue teams and reaffirmed their commitment to handling such incidents with empathy and responsibility.
Dulce’s disappearance sparked a wide-ranging rescue mission involving local and regional teams. Support came from Irapuato, Pueblo Nuevo, Huanímaro, Civil Protection units, the Salamanca Fire Department, and the Red Cross. Divers and volunteers worked tirelessly under the leadership of Liborio Vázquez and the Salamanca Rescue Brigade.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, June 12. According to early reports, Dulce and another child were playing near the river when they were caught in a sudden current. While the other child managed to hold onto a tree and was rescued, Dulce was carried away by the water. His account helped guide the early search efforts, but despite swift action, Dulce could not be located in time.
