The new year brings legal challenges for Dr. Emmanuel “Manny” Hostin, an orthopedic surgeon and husband of The View co-host Sunny Hostin. Dr. Hostin is among nearly 200 defendants named in a significant Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) lawsuit filed in New York, which alleges involvement in a large-scale federal insurance fraud scheme.
The lawsuit, filed on December 17, 2023, accuses Dr. Hostin of performing unnecessary arthroscopic surgeries and submitting fraudulent claims to American Transit, a leading insurance provider for taxi, Uber, and Lyft drivers. It also claims that Dr. Hostin received improper payments, disguised as “dividends” or other compensation, linked to patient referrals to certain medical facilities.
Dr. Hostin’s attorney, Daniel Thwaites, strongly denies the allegations, describing the lawsuit as a “blanket, meritless” claim from an insurance company facing financial difficulties. Thwaites emphasized that American Transit did not conduct a thorough investigation and is using legal action to pressure healthcare providers. He also defended Dr. Hostin’s professional reputation as untarnished.
