Years later, I met Travis. He was older, divorced, and didn’t have children. He seemed grounded—calm, reliable, the kind of person who brought a sense of stability. Slowly, we built a life together, and eventually, he became part of our home.

In the beginning, Travis treated Caleb with polite distance. He wasn’t unkind—just reserved. I figured it would take time for them to bond. Caleb remained respectful, but guarded. Still, I believed with patience and care, things would improve.

Then I was offered an incredible opportunity: a two-month consulting project overseas. Before accepting, I sat down with both of them. I made it clear I needed their support and trust. Travis reassured me that everything would be fine. Confident in their ability to manage, I left.

Two weeks in, the project stalled due to bureaucratic delays. With time on my hands, I decided to return home early and surprise them.

I arrived late one rainy evening. As the cab pulled into our neighborhood, I noticed a boy near a dumpster behind a corner store. He looked tired, thin, and soaking wet. As we passed, I recognized him. My heart stopped.
