My Son Wanted To Take His Grandma To Prom—And The School’s Response Shook Us Both

When my son first said it, I thought he was joking.

“Mom,” he said, “I want to take Nana to prom.”

I smiled. “That’s sweet, honey, but maybe you should ask someone your own age.”

He shrugged. “I already did. They all said no. But Nana’s the only one who always says yes.”

So, he meant it. He put on his best suit, styled his hair (three times!), and asked his grandmother to prom with a single white rose and a hand-painted sign that read, Will you prom with me? Her eyes filled with tears. Of course, she said yes.

We picked out a beautiful navy-blue dress, and she got her hair done at the same salon she used for my wedding. Everything was perfect—until my son called the school to ask for an extra ticket.

The response was not what we expected.

“I’m sorry,” the school secretary said. “There’s an age limit for prom guests.”

He calmly explained he wasn’t bringing multiple people—just his grandmother instead of a fellow student. But the answer didn’t change.
