NBC Analyst Responds After Being Let Go Over Comments on Charlie Kirk

The nation continues to grapple with the shocking assassination of Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, who was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University. The tragedy has drawn global attention, with tributes pouring in from political leaders, including former President Donald Trump, who called Kirk “the great, and even legendary, Charlie Kirk” and extended condolences to his family.

Amid the widespread coverage, MSNBC political analyst Matthew Dowd found himself at the center of controversy following comments he made regarding the environment surrounding the attack. Dowd, 64, had described Kirk as a divisive figure, saying that hateful thoughts can escalate into harmful words and actions. Many viewers interpreted his remarks as inappropriate, prompting MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler to issue a statement condemning the comments as “inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable.”

Following the backlash, Dowd publicly apologized. In a statement posted on BlueSky, he wrote:

“My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Charlie Kirk. On an earlier appearance on MSNBC, I was asked a question on the environment we are in. I apologize for my tone and words. Let me be clear, I in no way intended for my comments to blame Kirk for this horrendous attack. Let us all come together and condemn violence of any kind.”
