Workplaces often require a delicate balance of rules, personalities, and customer service. One of the most repeated phrases in business—“The customer is always right”—is meant to guide employees toward patience and professionalism. But sometimes, the words can be taken in ways no one expects.
Johnny, a new junior employee, discovered this the hard way. Known for his quick wit, Johnny had a habit of unintentionally landing in tricky situations. One afternoon, after a heated exchange with a departing customer, Johnny was summoned to his boss’s office.
“Johnny! Get in here immediately!” the boss boomed.
“Yes, sir?” Johnny answered, trying to maintain his composure.
The boss, clearly frustrated, leaned forward. “I saw you arguing with that customer. Remember—the customer is always right. Do you understand?”
Johnny nodded. “Yes, sir. The customer is always right.”
“Good. So tell me—what were you arguing about?” the boss asked.
Johnny hesitated, then answered honestly: “The customer said my boss is stupid and an idiot.”
The boss’s face darkened. “And what did you say?”
Calmly, Johnny replied, “I told him he’s right.”
