The attack, carried out from a rooftop overlooking the venue, has ignited a firestorm of political debate, outrage, and grief across the country. As federal prosecutors build their case, the FBI’s arrest of 22-year-old Tyler Robinson has introduced a new twist—not just because of the allegations against him, but because his own grandmother insists the authorities have the wrong man.
Robinson was arrested late last week after federal investigators claimed they had obtained evidence linking him to the killing. According to officials, that evidence includes surveillance footage of a figure on the rooftop near the time of the shooting, Discord messages that allegedly detail planning discussions, and—perhaps most damning—tips provided by some of Robinson’s own relatives.
Despite this, his grandmother, speaking publicly for the first time, has cast serious doubt on the FBI’s case. Describing her grandson as a “shy, quiet kid” who preferred video games and sketching in notebooks over any kind of political activity, she said the portrait painted by law enforcement simply does not match the young man she raised.
