About a month ago, James came home from work with an unexpected announcement. He left at 9:30 sharp each patrol night, flashlight in hand, jacket zipped, always offering a quick kiss before heading out. At first, I even felt a quiet pride, thinking he was stepping up for our community.

One Thursday night, after the kids were asleep, my phone rang with an unfamiliar number. A woman introduced herself as Linda, someone I’d never met. Her voice was tight with urgency.
