I bought my grandson a few new clothes—nothing designer or extravagant, just some nice shirts and pants that I thought would make him look handsome. I had carefully chosen the colors I knew he liked, picturing his smile when he wore them. For me, the gift wasn’t about money; it was about showing love in a small but thoughtful way.

When I showed the clothes to my daughter-in-law, I expected at least a polite smile. Instead, she frowned. Her voice was sharp as she asked, “Is this all you could afford?”

The words cut deeper than she probably realized. I stood there for a moment, feeling a lump in my throat. It wasn’t embarrassment over money—it was the sting of seeing my love reduced to a price tag. I didn’t want to argue or cause tension, so I quietly excused myself and went home. But her comment lingered. It played over and over in my mind, making me question whether my gift had been unworthy.

A few days later, my son and his family came over. I braced myself for the awkwardness, but what happened next left me speechless. My grandson came running toward me, beaming with joy, and to my surprise, he was wearing the very clothes I had bought. He hugged me tightly, his little arms squeezing as if he never wanted to let go.
