Barack Obama has stepped into the spotlight with one of his strongest rebukes yet of his successor, calling Donald Trump’s latest claim about autism and Tylenol “violence against the truth.” The former president’s words follow a firestorm triggered by Trump’s announcement this week, which stunned both the medical community and the public with sweeping statements that lacked any scientific basis.

The controversy began at a memorial event for the late political activist Charlie Kirk, held at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Speaking to a packed crowd of tens of thousands, Trump teased what he described as a major revelation. “I think we found an answer to autism,” he declared, promising that a news conference scheduled for the following day would be “one of the most important” of his career.
