Warm weather is here—longer days, backyard barbecues, and open windows bringing in fresh air. But it also means one thing: pests. From ants marching across your kitchen counters to mosquitoes swarming the porch, insects can turn summer comfort into frustration. Commercial bug sprays promise relief, but they often come with strong chemical odors, skin irritation, risks to pets, and environmental concerns. Luckily, there’s a safer, budget-friendly alternative you can make at home—and it works just as well, if not better.

The recipe is simple: mix ½ cup white vinegar, ½ cup olive or vegetable oil, and ½ cup mild shampoo in a bowl. Whisk until fully blended, then pour into a clean spray bottle.
You can easily customize this formula for extra protection. Lemon juice adds citric acid to repel ants and spiders. Essential oils enhance the mix: citronella targets mosquitoes, peppermint and eucalyptus repel ants and flies, and lavender keeps moths and gnats away while leaving a pleasant scent for humans. Just a few drops of your preferred oil not only boost effectiveness but also soften the strong vinegar smell.
