This Road Sign Confuses Almost Every Driver!

Across the UK, millions of drivers rely on road signs every day. But one in particular continues to spark arguments, confusion, and even dangerous mistakes: a plain white circle with a single thick black diagonal stripe. Simple as it looks, this is the national speed limit sign—and according to many drivers, it’s one of the most misunderstood signs on British roads.

Recently, one motorist claimed that “99% of drivers” don’t know what it really means. Judging by the online debate that followed, he wasn’t far off.

What the Sign Really Means
The national speed limit sign does not mean “drive as fast as you like.” Instead, it marks the point where the maximum legal speed applies, but the actual number depends on the road and the vehicle:

  • Cars & motorcycles → 60 mph on single carriageways, 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways
  • Vehicles towing trailers / larger vans → 50 mph on single carriageways, 60 mph on dual carriageways and motorways
  • Built-up areas with street lighting → still 30 mph, regardless of the sign

The problem? Most drivers forget these details after passing their theory test. Over time, myths spread—like joking that the sign means “unlimited speed zone” or “national drifting area.” Harmless online, but potentially disastrous on the road.
