Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is raising alarms over what he calls a “very dangerous escalation” in political rhetoric across the United States. In a recent interview with Fox News, Gingrich cautioned that growing hostility toward former President Donald Trump is fueling division and putting American democracy under strain.
“When national leaders attack institutions and dismiss the rule of law, they’re feeding chaos,” Gingrich said. “That kind of rhetoric doesn’t just divide—it weakens the foundations of government itself.”
He described the current moment as a “constitutional stress test”, comparing it to times in history when the nation’s unity was pushed to its limits. Citing Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, Gingrich reminded listeners that democracy can only survive when leaders act with restraint, integrity, and respect for law.
Gingrich criticized what he views as growing contempt among some Democratic lawmakers during recent congressional sessions, saying it reflects a shift from disagreement to outright detachment. “When you can’t applaud basic calls for unity, that’s not opposition—that’s disconnection,” he said. “It’s a sign of a political culture losing sight of governing.”
