For the First Time in History, a Muslim Immigrant, Zohran Mamdani, Becomes Mayor of New York

New York City has turned a historic page. On November 4, 2025, voters chose transformation over tradition — electing Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist from Queens, as the city’s first Muslim, first South Asian, and youngest mayor in more than a century.

Mamdani’s victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa wasn’t just a political surprise — it was a cultural moment that signaled a shift in power and identity for the nation’s largest city. With nearly all votes counted, Mamdani secured 50.4% of the vote to Cuomo’s 41.6%, while Sliwa trailed at 7.1%.

At his Brooklyn victory rally, the energy was electric. Over 2,000 supporters filled the room, waving banners and chanting his name. When Mamdani took the stage, his words struck both humility and conviction:

“The sun may have set over our city tonight,” he said, “but as Eugene Debs once said, ‘I can see the dawn of a better day for humanity.’”

He thanked his parents, his wife Rama Sawaf Duwaji, and the volunteers who “knocked on doors, froze on subway platforms, and believed in something bigger.” His speech quickly turned from gratitude to bold vision — one rooted in working-class justice.
