With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of this beloved actress and TV legend

The theater and television world is mourning the loss of Elizabeth Franz, the Tony Award-winning actress whose career spanned six decades and left an indelible mark on American drama. She passed away at 84 at her home in Woodbury, Connecticut, following a battle with cancer and complications from treatment, her husband Christopher Pelham confirmed.

Franz was often called “America’s Judi Dench,” a tribute to the elegance, emotional depth, and commanding presence she brought to every role. She first captivated audiences Off-Broadway as Sister Mary Ignatius in Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You, a performance that earned her an Obie Award and, unexpectedly, the respect of real-life nuns who initially protested the play.

Her Broadway work cemented her reputation. Franz’s portrayal of Linda Loman in the 1999 revival of Death of a Salesman alongside Brian Dennehy is remembered as one of the most profound interpretations of the role. Arthur Miller himself praised her for revealing a fierce protectiveness in Linda that had often been overlooked. Franz later earned an Emmy nomination for reprising the role in Showtime’s 2000 adaptation.

Her stage résumé was extraordinary: Brighton Beach Memoirs, Morning’s at Seven, The Cherry Orchard, The Miracle Worker, and Uncle Vanya, among many others. Even in her later years, she continued bringing unmatched skill and authenticity to every performance.
