SOTD – Prison Riot Claims 31 Lives, 27 Inmates Executed

Ecuador’s fragile prison system shattered once again early Tuesday, when a routine dispute inside a Machala facility exploded into a deadly massacre. By the time elite tactical units regained control, at least 31 inmates were dead, according to the national prison agency, SNAI. Shockingly, 27 of the victims had been hanged, signaling a calculated, brutal consolidation of power within the prison walls.

Chaos Erupts in the Dead of Night

The violence began around 3:00 a.m., long before the sun rose over the coastal city. Locals described scenes that resembled a battlefield more than a detention center: high-caliber gunfire, improvised explosives, and anguished cries from those trapped inside. By morning, forensic teams and police were confronted with a scene of staggering carnage. Four inmates died from gunshots or blunt force trauma, while the others had been executed in a chilling display of organized violence.

Dozens more were injured, including at least one police officer hospitalized during the operation to retake the prison. Elite units deployed tear gas and flashbangs to suppress warring factions, highlighting the extreme danger even for trained law enforcement personnel.

A recent reshuffling of inmates—intended to break gang strongholds—likely ignited the conflict. In Ecuadorian prisons, even minor adjustments to inmate housing can spark wars over territory, influence, and control of illicit operations.
