JD Vance and his wife, Usha, have had a whirlwind year. From bestselling author and venture capitalist to U.S. Vice President, Vance’s life is now firmly in the public eye—but his children remain delightfully private. The couple has worked hard to shield their three kids—Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel—from the spotlight, though they’ve recently shared a few rare glimpses into family life, including the playful fun the kids have with their dad’s Secret Service codename.
JD and Usha’s story began at Yale Law School in the early 2010s. Usha, born in 1986 in San Diego to Indian immigrant parents, brought a sharp intellect and calm guidance to their friendship. Vance has often described her as his “spirit guide” at Yale, saying she “instinctively understood the questions I didn’t even know to ask” and encouraged him to chase opportunities he hadn’t imagined. Their bond, forged through a shared love of learning, blossomed into love, and they married a year after graduation in dual ceremonies honoring both their traditions: a Hindu ceremony for Usha and a traditional wedding for JD.
Faith has played a role in their union. While JD was raised Christian but never baptized, Usha’s Hindu upbringing has helped shape their family values and supported Vance as he embraced his own faith in adulthood. “Usha was very supportive,” he said, reflecting on their spiritual journey together.
