A young man who was the sole survivor of a devastating family tragedy in 2024 has died suddenly at the age of 19, according to his relatives.
Sha Reh was just 17 years old when he was discovered with a gunshot injury inside his family’s home in West Valley City, Utah, in December 2024. Authorities responding to the scene later confirmed that five other members of his immediate family were found deceased in the residence.
Those identified included Sha’s mother, Bu Meh, 38, and his siblings: Kristina Ree, 8; Boe Reh, 11; and Nyay Meh, 2. Investigators determined that Sha’s father, Dae Reh, 42, was responsible for the deaths before taking his own life.
Sha was the only person to survive the incident. Although he sustained a severe head injury that resulted in the loss of his eyesight, he made a remarkable recovery and continued forward with rehabilitation and education.
This past weekend, Sha’s extended family confirmed his passing through a GoFundMe page created to assist with funeral and memorial expenses.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the unexpected passing of our beloved Sha Reh,” the statement read. “He died peacefully on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at the home of his aunt and uncle.”
The family reflected on the immense challenges Sha faced following the tragedy, noting that he had also been a victim in the incident but survived against overwhelming odds.
“Over the past 13 months, Sha showed incredible resilience,” the statement continued. “Despite losing his vision in both eyes, he worked tirelessly toward healing and independence.”
In January 2025, Sha enrolled at the Utah School for the Deaf and Blind, where he learned Braille and developed independent living skills, marking a major milestone in his recovery journey.
Earlier in May 2025, Sha shared his determination to remain hopeful and focused on the future despite his life-altering circumstances.
“I try to put good into the world,” he said at the time. “I’m grateful for every opportunity I have to be happy.”
Sha Reh’s story touched many across the community and beyond, serving as a powerful reminder of resilience in the face of unimaginable loss.
May he rest in peace.
