President Donald Trump has dispatched his top border enforcement official, Tom Homan, to Minnesota amid a major shift in federal immigration operations and widespread public backlash over controversial ICE actions in Minneapolis and surrounding areas. The move comes after a series of deadly incidents involving federal agents and mounting protests across the United States.
The situation in Minnesota has become one of the most visible flashpoints in the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement campaign. Thousands of federal agents — including officers with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) — were deployed as part of a large-scale operation aimed at arresting undocumented immigrants, including those with criminal records. At its peak, the federal presence in the state numbered over 3,000 agents, far outnumbering local law enforcement.
However, the campaign has generated intense controversy. In January, two U.S. citizens — Renee Good and Alex Pretti — were fatally shot by federal agents during enforcement actions. Those deaths sparked widespread outrage, protests, and legal challenges, with demonstrators calling for federal officers to withdraw and demanding accountability for the killings.
