Most homeowners have heard the familiar advice: the “nice side” of the fence should face outward. It’s repeated so often that it almost sounds like law. But in reality, it’s mostly tradition, not a legal requirement.
In many areas, there’s no official rule dictating which side of a fence must face a neighbor. The guideline exists as a courtesy—an effort to look tidy and avoid friction. Exceptions do exist, though. Certain cities, homeowner associations, or neighborhood covenants may require fences to face streets, sidewalks, or shared spaces. If a fence sits directly on the property line, both neighbors usually share responsibility for its placement and maintenance, making conversation essential. If the fence sits entirely on your property, the choice is typically yours—but neighborly consideration still matters.
