My Stepson’s Fiancée Told Me ‘Only Real Moms Get a Seat in the Front’

My Stepson’s Bride Said, “Only Biological Moms Sit in the Front”—Then He Did Something No One Expected

I met Nathan when he was six years old—small, quiet, and half-hidden behind his dad’s leg like he wasn’t sure the world was safe yet. It was my third date with Richard, and while he’d mentioned he had a son, nothing prepared me for what it would feel like to look at that little boy and instantly want to protect him.

Richard rested a hand on Nathan’s shoulder. “This is Victoria,” he said, careful and warm. “The woman I told you about.”

I lowered myself to Nathan’s level and smiled. “Hi, Nathan. Your dad says you like dinosaurs.”

I handed him a small gift bag. Inside was a kid-friendly paleontology book—nothing flashy, just something thoughtful. Later, Richard told me Nathan slept with it under his pillow for weeks.
