My Teen Son Wanted to Be Dropped Off Blocks Away From School—What I Found Out Changed Everything

For months, my fifteen-year-old son, Ethan, asked for the same favor every morning.

“Mom, can you drop me off at Fifth and Main?”

Not at the front entrance like most parents. Not even near the parking lot. Three blocks away.

I assumed it was the usual teenage independence thing—sophomore-year self-consciousness, the fear of being seen with your mom, all of it. So I didn’t push. I’d pull over, he’d hop out with his backpack, and I’d drive off thinking it was no big deal.
