Kevin Costner’s Early Life
Born on January 18th, 1955, in Lynwood, California, Kevin Costner grew up in Compton. His parents, William and Sharon Costner, raised him alongside his two brothers. While his father worked as an electrician and utilities executive, his mother served as a welfare worker.
Costner’s ancestry traces back to German immigrants in North Carolina, alongside English, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh roots. Raised Baptist, he excelled in sports, especially football, despite his disinterest in academics. He explored interests like playing the piano, writing poetry, and singing in the church choir.
Watching How the West Was Won as a child ignited his passion for western films. During high school, he played baseball and developed a keen interest in acting and dancing. It was during his last year of college at California State University Fullerton that he found his passion for acting.
Kevin Costner’s Career
In 1978, a chance encounter with actor Richard Burton on a flight changed Costner’s trajectory. Encouraged by Burton, Costner pursued acting, diving into lessons while juggling odd jobs. His film debut came in 1981 with Sizzle Beach USA, followed by minor roles in Night Shift (1982) and Testament (1983).
His breakthrough came with Lawrence Kasdan’s Silverado in 1985, paving the way for starring roles in hits like The Untouchables (1987) and No Way Out (1987). He cemented his status as a leading man with iconic roles in Bull Durham (1988) and Field of Dreams (1989). In 1990, he ventured into producing with TIG Productions, delivering his magnum opus, Dances with Wolves, which won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Costner.
