Twin pregnancies remain relatively rare, occurring in approximately 33 out of every 1,000 births, despite a 72% increase in likelihood from 1980 to 2018.
The chances of having identical twins are even slimmer, with an average of three to four pairs per 1,000 births.
At the age of 23, Savannah Combs was ecstatic to discover she was expecting twins. However, her joy was tempered when she learned that both twins had Down syndrome, a condition that rarely affects twins.
While initially upsetting, Savannah and her husband Justin Ackerman embraced their children wholeheartedly despite potential judgment from others.
“They are my little gems,” Savannah expressed. “Their uniqueness is what makes them so beautiful.”
Hailing from Middleburg, Florida, Savannah shared their journey on TikTok, documenting the postpartum experiences with their daughters, Kennadi Rue and Mckenli Ackerman, which quickly gained popularity.
In one video, Savannah recounted being advised to consider abortion due to their medical prognosis but decided to give them a chance.
“Every prenatal appointment where they were alive felt like a blessing,” Savannah recalled, noting her husband’s absence during critical moments due to military service.
