Erin and Mike married at 20 and enjoyed a wonderful marriage. But at 76, Mike felt they were too old for romance, and it was mostly one-sided. Heartbroken, Erin asked for a divorce, but a surprising event changed everything.
One day, Erin asked, “Why don’t you bring me flowers anymore?” After 56 years of marriage, Mike had stopped being romantic, which had always made their relationship special. “Erin, you won’t die if I don’t bring flowers every day,” Mike replied, flipping through TV channels. Erin was upset. “But it’s not fair. For the past month, you’ve stopped every romantic gesture. What’s going on? Are you having an affair? At our age?” she exclaimed.
“For God’s sake, Erin. It’s been decades since we got married, and I’ve given you something every day. But now you think I’m cheating? Are you serious?” Mike responded. “I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND! DON’T YOU LOVE ME ANYMORE?” Erin yelled. Mike stood up and said, “Maybe I’m tired of being the only one making an effort! For 56 years, I’ve done everything romantic. I buy flowers, gifts, and plan dates. And you just take it all without giving anything back!”
Erin was shocked but realized he was right. She never planned dates or bought him gifts. She thought maintaining their home and raising their kids was enough, but now it was just the two of them. She decided to change and planned a date, but Mike refused. “I don’t want to do that right now,” he said. Erin knew he was angry but hoped his feelings would change.
