I never imagined that our first Thanksgiving as newlyweds would turn into a memorable adventure. But thanks to our golden retriever Bella, a turkey that didn’t go as planned, and my husband Mark’s unexpected problem-solving, it became a story we’ll be laughing about for years to come.
Eight months into our marriage, Mark and I decided to host Thanksgiving for the first time. It was a special occasion—our first holiday as a married couple and a celebration of our new home. I was excited to make it perfect.
We had met at a summer barbecue hosted by a mutual friend, and Mark’s kindness had stood out from the start. After dating for a year and a half, he proposed with a beautiful sapphire ring that had been passed down in his family. Now, here we were, beginning new traditions in our first home together.
Thanksgiving prep had me running around with excitement. Mark was always ready to help, whether chopping vegetables or suggesting centerpiece ideas. Bella, our eager golden retriever, was always nearby, waiting for a chance to sneak a scrap.
By mid-afternoon, the house smelled of turkey, yams, and cider. Guests had begun to arrive, filling our home with warmth and conversation. My mother-in-law, Linda, smiled as she entered the kitchen, saying, “The food smells amazing.” I couldn’t have been prouder.
But then I realized I had forgotten ketchup. It seemed like a small thing, but I wanted everything to be just right. “I’ll go get it,” Mark offered, grabbing his keys.
Minutes passed. Twenty minutes turned into thirty, and the guests were getting hungry. Just as I was about to check in with Mark, he burst through the door, looking flustered. Before I could ask him anything, he did the unthinkable.
