I used to proudly call myself “Daddy’s little girl,” but that term feels hollow now. My dad, the man I thought I knew, turned out to be someone completely different. Let me explain how it all changed.

Growing up, my dad and I were close. I lived at home at 23, and he insisted I stay, offering me my own space in the house—a bedroom and bathroom on the second floor. It was my sanctuary, a space where I felt safe and loved. But over time, things started to shift. Dad became more distant and critical, and it seemed like nothing I did was right.

“You’re staying out too late,” he’d say. “You’re spending too much money.” But the hardest thing was when he said, “You smell bad. Take a shower with the soap I gave you.”

I was stunned. What was he talking about? He handed me a green bar of soap, which had an unusual scent, and insisted it would fix whatever “problem” he thought I had. I became fixated on the idea that something was wrong with me, showering obsessively, but nothing seemed to change. What hurt most was that my mom stayed silent. She didn’t defend me or say anything to help.

Then Henry, my boyfriend, came over and immediately sensed something was off. I was avoiding him, feeling embarrassed and ashamed. When I asked him, “Do I smell bad?” he laughed and reassured me, “No, babe, you smell fine.” But when he saw the soap in the bathroom, his face changed.

“Amy, where did you get this?” he asked, holding the soap with concern.
