Staten Island teen becomes one of the youngest African American-licensed pilots

Meet New York’s Youngest Pilot: 17-Year-Old Kamora Freeland

Kamora Freeland never imagined soaring through the skies.

As a child, the Staten Island native dreamed of exploring the depths of the ocean as a marine biologist. But fate—and a little push from her mother, Lakema—had other plans.

Now, at just 17 years old, Kamora is cruising at over 5,500 feet as one of the youngest licensed pilots in U.S. history.

“I earned my pilot’s license before I even got my driver’s license,” she told The Post with a laugh.

On February 26, Kamora officially became New York’s youngest pilot, earning her certification to fly a single-engine plane with up to 12 passengers. The very next day, she received her driver’s license—proving she was born to navigate the skies before the streets.
