Ten-year-old Kevin never expected to inherit anything from his grandmother. So when the movers dropped off her old, worn-out sofa, he barely reacted—until he sat on it and felt something hard beneath the cushion.
At first, he thought it was a broken spring. But as he lifted the cushion, his fingers brushed against a loose flap of fabric, barely sewn shut.
His heart pounded.
With clumsy hands, he grabbed a pair of scissors from the kitchen and carefully cut the stitches open.
Inside was a small rectangular box with two words written in black marker:
“For Kevin.”
Kevin’s breath hitched. Granny had left something just for him.
Tearing through the tape, he opened the box. Inside, he found a sealed envelope and a stack of legal documents. But what made his fingers tremble the most was a handwritten letter from Granny.
**“Dearest Kevin,
I’m sorry to place this burden on you at such a young age, but your well-being and future depend on the decision you make now. You need to know the truth: your father only returned for his inheritance. He doesn’t love you the way you deserve. I’ll explain everything, and then you must decide if he is worthy of your trust.”**
Kevin’s chest tightened. His father, who had just promised they’d be a family again, had lied?
He hesitated, glancing toward the living room where his father sat, glued to the TV, a beer in hand. Could it be true?
His fingers tightened around Granny’s letter as he continued reading.
