The Call That Changed Everything
It started as an ordinary evening. I was cleaning up after dinner, the soft hum of the dishwasher filling the room, when my phone rang.
Unknown Number.
I almost ignored it, but something urged me to pick up.
“Is this Ms. Donna?” a voice asked, professional but urgent.
“Yes?”
“This is St. Mary’s Hospital. Your husband, Brian, has been in a serious car accident. You need to come immediately.”
The world seemed to tilt. My heart pounded as I grabbed my keys and rushed out the door.
I was completely unprepared for what I would discover at the hospital.
An Unexpected Encounter
Hospitals have a distinct atmosphere—a mixture of antiseptic and quiet urgency. I hurried to the front desk.
“My husband, Brian, was in an accident. Where is he?” I asked.
The receptionist looked up, but before she could respond, another voice spoke.
“I’m here to see my husband, Brian.”
I turned and saw her—a woman in her late twenties, dressed casually, her face pale with worry.
The receptionist blinked. “You both said you’re his wife?”
A heavy silence fell between us.
The truth hit us at the same time.
We were both married to Brian.
