For months, an unusual mystery had puzzled our household. Every time my mother-in-law, Andrea, visited, eggs seemed to disappear from our refrigerator. At first, I dismissed it, assuming she might have taken a couple for breakfast or borrowed some in a pinch. But as the weeks passed, the frequency of the missing eggs became impossible to ignore.
My husband, James, and I took pride in our budgeting, ensuring every dollar was well spent. With grocery costs rising, especially eggs at over $6 per dozen, we carefully reserved them for our children’s breakfasts. But despite our careful planning, the eggs continued to vanish at an alarming rate. One morning, while preparing breakfast, I noticed the carton felt unusually light. After counting the eggs, I was certain they were missing.
“James, we had more eggs yesterday,” I said, puzzled.
He glanced up from his phone and suggested, “Maybe the kids made some after school?”
But I knew better. I had been tracking our groceries meticulously, and the numbers just didn’t add up. Something was off.
