I never imagined I would be the kind of person to call off a wedding, but life has a way of leading us to unexpected realizations. Normally, I make decisions after discussing them with friends and family, but this time, I knew deep down what had to be done.
I met Richard when he joined the company as a junior executive in the accounting department. He had a confident presence, a warm smile, and an easygoing sense of humor that made him well-liked among our colleagues. We quickly became friends, often chatting during coffee breaks, and before long, our connection grew into something more.
Just seven weeks later, we started dating. Richard seemed like everything I had hoped for in a partner—kind, responsible, and always composed, which balanced out my occasional clumsiness. When he proposed six months later, I said yes without hesitation, believing I had found my perfect match.
Everything seemed to fall into place—except for one thing: I had never met Richard’s parents. They lived in another state, and every time I suggested visiting, there was always a reason to delay. However, once we announced our engagement, his parents insisted on meeting me. Richard arranged a dinner at a beautiful restaurant to mark the occasion.
As the evening approached, I was eager yet nervous. I carefully chose an elegant black dress, hoping to make a good first impression. When Richard picked me up, he reassured me with a smile, saying I had nothing to worry about. However, I wasn’t prepared for what was to come.
