I’m Rachel, a 28-year-old waitress working my way through college. Until last week, I was engaged to Adam—a dedicated pediatrician with a promising future. But when he made a comment that left me feeling invisible, I realized it was time to stand up for myself in a way he would never forget.
An Unexpected Request
It was a Friday evening, and I was looking forward to unwinding after a long week. I was at Adam’s place, relaxing on the couch when I received exciting news.
“Hey, did you see this?” I called out. “The committee chose my essay—I got the scholarship!”
Before Adam could respond, the doorbell rang. He straightened up and shot me a quick smile. “Oh, that must be my colleagues. They said they might drop by.”
I was caught off guard. “Colleagues? You didn’t mention anything about—”
“Relax,” he said casually. “It’s nothing major.” But then, his expression changed slightly. “Actually… Rachel, could you hang out in the kitchen for a bit? Maybe prepare something for everyone?”
I paused. “What?”
“It’s just… they’re all doctors, you know? The conversation might be a bit technical. I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable.”
