Jennette McCurdy: From Child Star to Survivor and Advocate

She lit up screens as a child, her bright eyes and infectious energy captivating millions. By six, Jennette McCurdy was already a familiar face on television. But behind the camera, her world was far from the laughter and applause fans saw.

A Childhood Overshadowed by Control and Isolation

Growing up in Garden Grove, California, Jennette was homeschooled and isolated from peers. Her family, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, struggled with financial pressure and her mother’s compulsive hoarding after battling cancer. Bedrooms were unusable; she and her siblings slept on trifold gymnastics mats in the living room.

Her mother’s husband — the man she believed was her father — worked two jobs to keep the family afloat. Later, after her mother’s passing, Jennette learned he was not her biological father.

From a young age, Jennette was pushed into acting, not for fun, but as a lifeline for the family. “I think [my mother] wanted me to have a better life than she had,” Jennette later reflected. She made her debut at just eight on Mad TV, and by her teens, she had become the family’s primary breadwinner.
