In an interview with Jonathan Karl, Schiff emphasized that voters did not hear a clear, consistent message from the party about the key issue affecting many families: the rising cost of living. “We should have stayed laser-focused on cost-of-living relief,” he said. Schiff added that the party’s scattered approach to various controversies diverted attention from the most important goal—helping families manage expenses like rent, groceries, health care, and child care.

Schiff’s comments came shortly after President Donald Trump’s historic 100-minute address to Congress. The speech was marked by protests, interruptions, and the removal of Rep. Al Green, which dominated news coverage and overshadowed Democratic economic messages. With multiple walkouts and disruptions, Speaker Mike Johnson eventually restored order, but the focus remained on the drama rather than policy debates. Trump set a record for the longest joint address in modern history, making headlines the main story.

Within Democratic circles, this event reignited a debate: should the party respond to spectacle with spectacle, or concentrate on practical, everyday concerns? Schiff rejected the idea, proposed by strategist James Carville, that Democrats should simply wait for Republicans to falter on their own. Instead, he advocated for a “broad, bold agenda” that addresses real issues such as wage stagnation, housing shortages, and rising medical costs.
