What Causes a Bruise?
A bruise, or ecchymosis, forms when small blood vessels under the skin break, causing blood to leak into nearby tissues. This usually happens after an impact—bumping into furniture, falling, or even pressing too hard on the skin. The result is the familiar discoloration that goes from red or purple to green, yellow, or brown as it heals.
