Hollywood is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic figures. Robert Redford, the Academy Award-winning actor, director, and founder of the Sundance Film Festival, has passed away at the age of 89.

The sad news was confirmed by his longtime publicist, Cindi Berger, who shared that Redford died peacefully in his sleep at his home in the Utah mountains, surrounded by loved ones. “Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance — the place he loved, with the people he loved. He will be missed greatly,” Berger said in a statement, adding that the family has requested privacy during this time.

Known for unforgettable performances in classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, All the President’s Men, and Out of Africa, Redford also earned an Academy Award for Best Director for Ordinary People in 1981. His influence on film stretched far beyond the screen, thanks to his creation of the Sundance Film Festival, which gave countless independent filmmakers a platform to share their stories.

Following news of his passing, condolences poured in from across the world, including from former President Donald Trump. “Robert Redford had a series of years where there was nobody better,” Trump said, calling him a remarkable talent.
