Amanda Sue Jones, who was camping in the area with her family, described the frightening speed of the rising floodwaters in an interview with CNN.

“It was just immeasurably fast,” she said. “Everything seemed fine, and then suddenly, the water started spilling past the riverbanks and into the grass. That’s when we knew it was time to leave. Within minutes, cabins were being washed away.”

Jones said the situation shifted quickly from calm to chaotic, adding, “It wasn’t just heavy rain—it felt like a wall of water came through.”

Emma Foltz Recognized for Saving Lives

Among the stories of strength and quick thinking, Emma Foltz is being praised by many for her actions during the flood. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry highlighted her bravery on social media, thanking her for evacuating 14 campers to safety.

“She played an instrumental role in helping evacuate 14 of her campers to safety,” Gov. Landry posted. “Please join me in thanking Emma for her hard work and bravery under immense pressure.”

Foltz, who was raised in Alexandria, Louisiana, is currently a senior at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston. She has worked as a counselor at Camp Mystic for the past three years.

Supporters from around the country have shared messages of thanks and encouragement, calling her a hero.

“Thank you for your quick thinking and for saving the children,” one comment read. “May God bless you and your family. You are an inspiration.”

Others echoed the sentiment, with messages like, “You saved 14 lives and showed immense courage in the face of unimaginable danger,” and, “Emma, you are a true hero.”
