Celebrity Officially Renounces His Citizenship

Renouncing American citizenship is rare but not unheard of. While dissatisfaction with U.S. politics is common, few take the step of completely severing ties.

Some notable figures have chosen this path, starting new lives abroad.

After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong announced during a London concert his decision to renounce his U.S. citizenship, citing frustration over the lack of protection for women’s reproductive rights.

The following day, he reiterated his stance during a performance in Huddersfield, England.

Similarly, pop star Olivia Rodrigo voiced her disapproval at the U.K.’s Glastonbury Festival, dedicating a song to the conservative justices behind the decision and calling them out by name.
