“Child Star Remembered: The Heartfelt Story of Benji Gregory from ALF”

Fans around the world are mourning the loss of Benji Gregory — the beloved child actor who brought laughter and warmth to millions as Brian Tanner on the hit ’80s sitcom ALF.

Born on May 26, 1978, in Los Angeles, California, Benjamin Gregory Hertzberg seemed destined for the spotlight. Coming from a family of performers, he started acting at a young age, appearing in commercials and guest-starring on shows like Punky Brewster, T.J. Hooker, The Twilight Zone, and Amazing Stories.

But it was ALF that made him a household name. From 1986 to 1990, Benji’s portrayal of Brian Tanner—the kind, quick-witted youngest son—captured hearts everywhere. The show’s mix of humor and heart made it an instant classic, and Benji became one of television’s most recognizable young stars.

After ALF ended, Benji gradually stepped away from Hollywood. He explored new paths, joining the U.S. Navy in 2003 and serving as an aerographer’s mate aboard the USS Carl Vinson. His dedication and discipline earned him respect from peers, but after a medical discharge in 2005, he chose a quieter life away from fame.

In later years, Benji was open about his mental health journey, sharing his experiences with bipolar disorder, depression, and a chronic sleep condition. Through it all, his loyal service dog, Hans, remained by his side, offering comfort and companionship.

On June 13, 2024, tragedy struck when Benji was found in his car in Peoria, Arizona, with Hans beside him. Authorities confirmed the cause of death as accidental heat exposure, worsened by an underlying medical condition. Temperatures that day reached over 109°F (43°C) — a powerful reminder of how dangerous extreme heat can be.

His sister, Rebecca, shared a heartfelt message:

“It is with a heavy heart my family has suffered a loss way too early. Ben was a great son, brother, and uncle. He made us laugh often and will be deeply missed.”

Beyond the fame and nostalgia, Benji’s story reflects the resilience of a man who faced challenges with honesty and heart. He was an actor, a veteran, a brother, and a devoted dog owner — someone who found meaning not in fame, but in authenticity and quiet strength.

As fans remember him, his legacy continues through the joy he brought to screens and the lessons his life story leaves behind — about kindness, awareness, and empathy.

❤️ Rest in peace, Benji Gregory — forever our Brian Tanner.
