The trade standoff between the United States and China has entered a new and intense phase, with both countries dramatically increasing tariffs on each other’s goods. Following President Donald Trump’s recent move to raise tariffs on Chinese imports up to 145%, China swiftly responded by increasing its own tariffs from 84% to 125%.

This latest development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing trade dispute, which reignited after Trump returned to office in January. On April 9, the U.S. administration announced the new tariff levels, targeting a wide array of Chinese products. Just three days later, China unveiled its countermeasures, citing the need to protect its economic interests and maintain fair trade practices.

China’s State Council Tariff Commission criticized the U.S. move as “unilateral,” stating it violates international trade norms. The Commission emphasized that the new tariff rates, effective immediately, were implemented in accordance with domestic laws and with full approval from the State Council.

The updated policy brings the tariff on certain American imports to 125%, significantly limiting the competitiveness of U.S. goods in the Chinese market. Chinese officials warned that any further tariff hikes by the U.S. would not be met with compromise.
