When the guests arrived and sat down for dinner, one of Connor’s friends, Ross, complimented Lucy, saying, “Aunt Lucy, this food is incredible! Did you cook all of it yourself?”
“I did, Ross,” Lucy replied with a smile. She noticed Connor beaming with pride, which made her feel happy, although she missed Ron, as it was their first Christmas without him.
Eve, clearly envious of the praise Lucy was receiving, approached her after dinner. “Lucy, can we talk?” she asked.
“Of course,” Lucy replied. “What’s on your mind?”
“I didn’t realize how much you were doing around the house,” Eve admitted. “I’ve been adding to your load because I wanted to take it easy. I’m so sorry.”
Lucy smiled, satisfied that Eve had learned her lesson. “It’s more than fine,” Lucy said. “I just want you to understand that while I enjoy helping out, my age and knees make it more difficult.”
“We make a great team,” Eve said warmly. “Come on, let’s get you comfortable. I’ll make you a cup of tea.”
